Las Vegas Responsive Tweets

Designers are given the opportunity to voice change in society, express themselves, and show compassion and empathy for others. When I heard about the devastating shooting that happened in Las Vegas, I was overwhelmed with emotion, as were many others; especially artists and musicians nationwide. Compelled to respond to this horrible tragedy, I created a series of typographical designs influenced by Gestalt Principles. Through typography, people can see themselves in the words and therefore relate to these emotional responses of musical artists. This package of typographical tweets shows the impact of the Las Vegas shooting on music community and so many lives affected. The color blue is used through the designs because it is a calming color and through this typography, I wanted people to feel hopeful and calm. “Nobody told me there’d be days like today” a tweet from The Chainsmokers, in response to the shooting, reminded me that this world is not all that it is said to be. Figure Ground is used in the blue letters that state “they lied.” A tweet by P!nk that says, “I think this world needs HOPE and LOVE and POSITIVITY.” is displayed through the principle of similarity. The same color dots spell out the words, LOVE, HOPE and POSITIVITY. To reflect P!nk’s tweet about the world needing to become a better place, is reflected through the dots that represent people in the world. If person by person, we all start becoming more loving, more positive and more hopeful then the world can become a safer and better place. “Keep fighting! There’s hope in the chaos!” a tweet by Lecrae is displayed through the imagery principle. The word “hope” is in the counter of the word “chaos” to reflect Lecrae’s tweet to remind others to remember that there is hope in the chaos. A tweet by John Mayer that stood out immediately said “No words. Just grief, sadness and the never-ending attempt to make sense of something utterly senseless.” Continuation is shown in this where this tweet is covered up by the word LAS VEGAS. The viewer is still able to see the sentence and read it, but having LAS VEGAS cover it reflects the tragic event and how it left so many not knowing how to feel. Lastly, a more positive tweet by Ariana Grande “sending as much love and healing energy as humanly possible out into the world tonight. The positive and healing energy that Ariana is wanting other to feel is shown through the repetition and movement of the words “healing energy.”
